Students Attend the First Prom

Remember your prom? Eighteen-year-old Tim Meiklejohn calmly drank a glass of water at his date’s house as he waited for her to get ready, for the first Clarksburg High School prom on Saturday. ‘‘Prom means everything,” Meiklejohn said, dressed in a black tuxedo with a grey vest and pink tie. ‘‘I’ve been looking forward to it all year.”

Clarksburg High opened for the first time in fall 2006; drawing freshmen through juniors from the Damascus, Watkins Mill and Seneca Valley high school clusters. The school did not have a prom last year because there was no senior class. Last weekend’s inaugural prom was held at the Lynnfield Event Complex in Frederick, with Las Vegas as the theme.

Meiklejohn, a senior from Clarksburg, joined his date, Briana Gomez, 17, a junior from Clarksburg, at her house along with eight friends and their family members. All of the young adults stood in front of the black limousine as their parents took group photos and cheered them on. The family members hugged the youngsters and waved goodbye as the limousine pulled away, taking them to dinner at Cantina d’Italia in the Kentlands before the prom.

Vickie Baldwin of Clarksburg, the mother of LeeAnne, 17, a senior, said all proms are special, but this one was ‘‘really special” because it was the first prom at a new school. She looked on and reminisced, as the limousine pulled away. While most parents don’t regard prom night as a big deal, for their children, with many of them seniors and about to graduate, it is a milestone event.

Transportation to the prom is as important these days as the choice of outfits. After a week or more of pre-prom preparations the last thing parents should have to worry about is who is going to drive their kids to the prom on prom night. Notwithstanding the safety concerns parents may have about their children driving themselves, arriving at the prom in a hired stretched limousine is all about style and creating an impression.

Most professional limo companies have a no drug or alcohol policy and will not change their designated route unless authorisation is given by a parent. When hiring a limo for the prom, parents should also check to see if the limo remains on site in case of an emergency.
